Reflective Synopsis

The technological changes in this the twenty first century is having fundamental effects on the way in which we learn and live our everyday lives. Smith &Lynch (2006, p.56) state that the knowledge-base of today is dynamic, as new innovations and advancements supersede the former at exponential rates, requiring continual learning to maintain knowledge currency.

Beginning this course in E-Learning, I was a little hesitant about my own abilities and felt like a fish out of water. I have since then discovered that age is no barrier to learning and that through perseverance, time and sequential learning, I was able to personally succeed. Throughout this course I have discovered many things about myself, such as, using technology takes patience, is addictive, must be hands on, and can be very frustrating at times.

This course has me asking a lot of questions about the purpose of many tools, the suitability of use in the classroom and how the tool will enhance the students learning. I now understand that no matter what ICT tool you use, you must have effective lesson plans that ask the 8 Learning Management questions (Smith &Lynch 2006). McCullough (2010) discusses the “cycle of planning” stating that the process (or more correctly the "cycle") for ICT planning in schools is essentially no different to the cycle for any other planning activity. He also talks the importance of evaluating what we are teaching, not only to gauge our success, but also to guide future planning. I realise from this, that to have authentic effective lessons, I need to keep abreast of the many changes in technology, so that my lessons are current and do not become outdated or meaningless to the students in the 21st century classroom.

Time is required for teachers to become more effective users and guiders for the students in their care, as many feel they are technological incompetents (Ashman, 2009). That was me at the beginning of this course, hence the name TECHNOCLUE. Bitner (2002) states that before technology can effect changes in the classroom, those ultimately responsible for the classroom must be considered. Teachers must learn to use technology and must allow it to change their present teaching paradigm. I believe that a school with strong leadership understands the importance of teacher training which will therefore assist teachers in becoming more technologically savvy. Lovely lesson plans using ICT tools may look good on paper, but to have meaningful lessons, careful planning for the effectiveness and purpose of each tool is critical. This must then be followed by critical reflection of the effectiveness of each process within the lesson and the effectiveness of the ICT tool. (McCullogh, 2010). Realising the importance of effective planning and reflection brought me to a point during this course, to see that I was only thinking about students who had the ability to use the ICT tools. I was not thinking about those students who had disabilities and required technology to attend schools. Bridge and Crosser (2010, p. 172) state that Technologies are fundamental to the successful inclusion of students with disabilities in schools. They go on to say that there are many challenges for teachers to learn about new technologies for disabled students, but information and communication technologies offer students the opportunity to compensate for physical or functional limitations, allowing then access to the curriculum and communities by enlarging the scope of activities available to them. I felt quite humbled when I read this and began to appreciate the importance that ICT tools, can have to assist all students in an inclusive classroom. (Education Qld, 2002)

The tools that I have researched from the Moodle site have been posted on my Blog, along with numerous others such as Movie Maker and Ipod Technology in the classroom. I did discover that due to my involvement with both my children’s schools, I was quite up to date with the ICT teaching tools used in schools today. However I did find many tools that were very new to me, such as PREZI, WIKI’S, PICASA, MOBAPHOTO and Bubbl.us. As a kinaesthetic learner I discovered that to find out how effective the tools were I needed to practise and then try them out on my little guinea pigs (Connor and Heather). Some tools were more suitable for the Upper to High school students (Connor), where as, the six I have chosen were more suitable to lower- middle primary (Heather).

Discussions with my peers through Blog interactions as well as face to face have assisted me greatly. Firstly, by giving me an insight into why some tools can enhance students learning. Secondly giving me the opportunity to share my own understandings of a specific tool and finally, realising that a deeper understanding of an ICT tool is required before introducing it in a classroom. (View discussions)

I have selected six tools that I would like to discuss in more detail. I have chosen these out of the countless tools, as I am studying Early Childhood and consider these to be the most suitable (of the ones I have tested) and will enhance learning for students in year levels (P-3). With all these tools, scaffolding through discussion, modelling (MINE – OURS – YOURS) and reflection will be required at each stage of use. I have selected the BIG 6 design framework as it has six simple steps to follow, these being task definition, information seeking strategies, location and access, use of information, synthesis and evaluation. For lower grades instead of the BIG 6 there are the Super 3, being plan, do and review. Alongside the Dimensions of Learning (Marzano & Pickering, 1997), these two learning frameworks would assist in enhancing student learning in the use of ICT tools, whilst making it meaningful with real life skills, such as communication, cooperation, problem solving and higher order thinking.

Tool

Plus

Minus

How to use
effectively within the classroom

*Simple to design. *Students could add posts, pictures
etc simply to site.
*Parents could respond to Blog.

*Timetabling for the
completion of Blog (weekly).

*Class computers must be made available.*Permission to use within school.

I would use this in
lower grades to create a class Blog. Students would have ownership of all
posts this being promoted through cooperation,
creativity, engagement and school and class citizenship. Partnerships (home –
school) would be enhanced with students able to discuss with their parents
all their learning thus taking pride in their work.

*Very quick and easy
to use.*Engaging tool with a good choice of characters.* Students can either
type message or record message. Safe in the knowledge that students own image
not identified.

*Limited
applications in the classroom.*Voice difficult to recognise at times.*Short
dialogue required.

As a hook (Engage)
to any lesson, this would be an effective tool. Short instructions, personal
message, or used to tell students what they will be learning today. Working
with a class Blog, students would use cooperation to work collaboratively in
small groups to design a Voki, and choose the
message. This would involve active citizenship along with group identity
(Education Qld, 2002) where students are encouraged to work alongside peers
and have their ideas valued.

*Simple to use. *Assists students with research.* Promotes
students in acquiring and integrating knowledge.

*Keyboard skills
required along with understanding of key phrases.*Sites within schools would
have to be checked before hand if available. (Some
restrictions)* Online safety must be discussed
before commencement.

I would begin using
this tool as a whole class exercise. Discussion would take place about what
we are looking for and what words we should key in to find some extra
information. This would be very effective to use the BIG 6 / Super 3 alongside
as a guideline for students to follow.

*Simple to use. *Assist students with staying connected to the world
in which they live.*Use at any level.*

*Computers or
Interactive white board must be accessible.*

In class, I would
use this tool so that students can see the changes to the planet. In the KLA
of science and SOSE, we could look at earth from a different perspective,
travel around the world, and observe countries of interest and buildings, discovering
new facts.

*Easy to follow step
by step instructions. *Adding music and descriptions
promoting student creativity.
Assist visual learners.

*Understanding of
digital cameras must come first.*Safety of images (permission).*Handling of
equipment.

This tool would be used in conjunction with the scaffolding of the
use of digital cameras. As they are so accessible students in small groups
could work together to take photos, and then through teamwork select the
best, and create their story. In doing this students would be extending and
refining their knowledge, problem solving and encourage students to work with
peers

Easy to follow
steps.
*Promote student
independence.*

*Word recognition/
spelling required.

I would use this
tool in class as a KWL. Students could type words that they wish to know more
about and then discussed.

Up to date
technology.
*Easy
to use.*Portable.*Inexpensive.*Easy manipulation.
*Promote
independence.

Care for equipment.

Could use across
many KLA’s especially Math, English and Music. Self paced tool, which
promotes independence and self challenge.

During this course I have developed a deeper understanding of the design of ICT activities at all student levels. Education Queensland (2003), states that for learning managers it is important to identify and accommodate both the learning styles and the sensory and cognitive access, response, input and output needs of all students. Understanding this, I still have this little voice saying “What happens when it all goes wrong?” I was reading in the National Geographic about The 21st Century Grid. This was quite an eye opening article written by Joel Achenbach (2010, p. 122), where he describes us as creatures of the grid, we are embedded in it and empowered by it. The article went on to discuss the capabilities of the Grid and due to the outdated equipment and all our modern day electrical equipment the power might just go out, leaving us fumbling for flashlights and candles... Then it struck me, what if somebody turned off the switch, where would that leave the learning manager and the students. This brought me back to the importance of designing effective lessons that use ICT’s to enhance learning and support effective teacher pedagogy. I believe that students require an all rounded education that incorporates ICT’s into their everyday learning, together with thorough understandings in literacy and numeracy. Having these skills will enable students to comprehend the world of technology in a more successful manner, thus enhancing learning and promoting life long learners.

Virus

Woke up Saturday morning switched on the computer and what did I find but a very bad virus. This virus had attached itself to my Internet connection and would not allow me to open any files. It would just scream at me and say that I required to buy this new virus protection programme.
Lucky I was smart enough not to put in that visa card number, where that would be the end of my funds....

This for me was the first virus I had gotten and did not really understand where it came from. My virus software is now updated and I feel very secure now.
I was speaking to Stacey  Caldwell (fellow student) about this and she was telling me about the free software available on the CQU site. http://cqu-av.cqu.edu.au/. I did not realise this service was available and will now download this software as I feel that this will give me added protection.
Computer protection and identity protection safety is a very important factor when using computers in schools and at home. Students need to understand the importance of not downloading sites which are not approved by their anti virus programme and the importance of credit protection (not putting in visa card numbers). This would be really important for students in the high schools to understand - fraud.

So much to learn but yet it can all be gone in a second.

Photostory

As they say in the advert "Let's make Show and Tell more exciting".
Photo story enables the user to create slide shows using your digital photos. With a single click, you can touch-up, crop, or rotate pictures. Add stunning special effects, soundtracks, and your own voice narration to your photo stories. Then, personalize them with titles and captions. Small file sizes make it easy to send your photo stories in an e-mail. Watch them on your TV, a computer, or a Windows Mobile–based portable device.
Nice tool to use, straight forward, simple to use and has many effects that can be added to enhance the story. This tool could be used to create a class or whole school video for example photos taken during sports day or under eights day could be put on story board and then shown to the school. Another could be a class project where the students take pictures of the stages of litter that increase as the school day passes. This could be shown to whole school with the intent on littering less "Saving the Environment".
Digital cameras are another useful and pretty inexpensive tool for classrooms to have. Teachers would have to scaffold lessons on care, use and uploads but once this has occurred students should be able to work independently within group setting to achieve the goals set.

Picasa

http://picasa.en.softonic.com/download#pathbar
This was great being able to send directly to a blog. This would be a very useful tool if creating a class blog and which to share work, drawings etc . Easy to use, catalogues simply and has many additional tools. I believe I would use this tool in my everyday life as well as a class tool. For family photos It would enable me to keep them in date order and time. Posted by Picasa

Mobaphoto

MobaPhoto is free software that allows you to create some professional looking photo galleries for your webpage. MobaPhoto also allows you to resize, crop or correct red-eyes of all your pictures.
MobaPhoto is a nice freeware for managing your digital photos. MobaPhoto allows you to resize, crop, correct red-eyes of all your pictures very easily in "batch-mode". It allows you to create automatically some beautiful photo galleries and upload them on your website without having any knowledge in website creation

Easy tool to use but
I would like to try some of the other tools I have read in some of my peers blogs such as PICASA and IMAGESHACK. I will post to this post later.

Windows Movie Maker

This is about the easiest tool to use that I have found.I made this movie with my son for one of his school assignments. We just go the digital recorder and then uploaded onto the computer and voila a movie about him. Scaffolding during lesson would be required for students of all ages. Teachers could assist the younger year levels and discussions about care of the camera would be required. For arts lessons students could use this tool to record the differing stages in their design and creation processes. This could then be used as a culminative assessment piece for both individuals and groups. Depending on the year level both the recorder and the movie could assist students to investigate the world in which they live "connectedness". Working in teams, designating jobs etc are all part of problem solving and assist in developing cooperation and independence in students.

NOT WHAT THE ANYMORE but more WHERE HAS ALL THE TIME GONE?????

I have been completing my blog daily and commenting on many others. I still am finding it completely time consuming looking and commenting on each individual tool. This is especially so when I know that the tool I am looking into does not appeal to me as a future teacher, and is inappropriate for the Early Years classroom levels. I have still to complete some of the weekly activities and hope that some of these tools will appeal to me and be age and learning appropriate.

Looking forward to reading many more blogs,as there are some great tools not named on moodle site  that students have investigated.

INTERACTIVE POWERPOINTS

I have completed many PowerPoint's throughout the last three years. My first ever being in 2008. I found it so simple to use, student friendly, with simple instructions for teachers to scaffold lessons within the class. I would use PowerPoint's for all lessons and year levels (Prep upwards). I have found lots of uses for PowerPoint's although there can be an overuse of it, especially within the University lectures.
This site I have found is very informative, but time consuming to read. For me I need to practise, make mistakes, ask questions and then keep practising until I get it right.
http://www.actden.com/pp2007/index.htm

Interactive PowerPoint's have amazing possibilities within the classroom. The idea of having quiz games etc as an effective interactive tool could be used as great hook for a unit of work or assessment tool for the design / creation/ of power points or any KLA.

Here are some sites I found quite interesting for PowerPoint presentations in the classroom.

Top 10 ICT Tools 4 Education

I found this youtube video that I thought was quite interesting and explained the many reasons for using ICT's in school. It also has many links that you can go to to look at othe effective teaching / learning tools.

GOOGLE EARTH

This resource is a real winner. It allows students to see the here and now and feel connected to the world in which they live. This resource enables students to look at space and locations around the world.
In a recent assignment I used this tool to discuss all the changes in our local area.
I retrieved some old images of certain location around the Gladstone area and then asked the students to locate on google earth the pictures of that specific location at present. We then discussed all the changes that we could see and discussed why they would have been made and what differences they made to the community.
I would use this tool again, there are so many KLA's that this would be a great learning tool for e.g SOSE, English, Science.

wordles

http://www.wordle.net/

I love this tool. Very simple to use, easy instructions, beautiful designs, lots of fun. I would use this tool from Prep upwards, create a class name wordle, Birthday months etc. Students could work in small groups, paired, individually to create a design their own wordle. Printing off could be done immediately so that the students could see their work and also take home to show their parents.

I would use this tool to help design some classroom word and number games. Similar to Pictureka, I would design a Wordareka or Numbereka with card and small wordle boards. These boards could be laminated and more designed throughout the year as learning experiences have been achieved.

Multiple Intelligences

This is me and I totally agree with the results. I think this site enables you to see exactly what type of person you are, without you being able to control the results.
It was interesting to read about the professions I would be suitable for and the famous people I share my results with. Teaching and counselling were the top of the list, so that is a good sign I hope for my future.

You can also try these tests out with your partner to see if you are compatible or not...

Prezi

I have researched Prezi at http://prezi.com/learn/. I do think that this tool would be great for upper primary and secondary school students. Lots of details can be displayed and focused upon through the moving canvas.
For example a class concept web that has been created  can then be viewed in smaller sections, discussed and research in more detail.
I did find that it made me a little sea sick as I moved around the canvas. Students would I feel enjoy the visual and moving aspects of this learning tool.
I am not too sure that I would use this tool, but it is one that maybe with a little practise would provide a great hook for students to begin a new unit of work.

Blogging about Blogging

I have been up since 5.30am today working on this assignment and two others.
Where does all the time go. I have been researching digital tools, updating my Blog, working on unpublished articles and still have not had time to read anyone else's Blog. I do apologise and will comment before the day has ended.
I am really enjoying this subject now, as before I felt a little intimidated about my computer skills. They are building slowly but surely and hopefully before Alzheimer's sets in, I will remember what I have learned and use these skills with students in the classroom.
Good luck all followers.

WHICH LEARNING FRAMEWORK?

I have read all the readings etc for selecting a framework to analyze the digital tools within my Blog.
I am a little worried as I quite like the The Big Six, Dimensions of Learning and also the Learning Engagement Theory.
What to choose???
I can see that all of these learning frameworks are similar in many aspects, but I realise that using the familiar DOL would be simpler for me but would it then be challenging?
AFTER MUCH RESEARCH I HAVE SELECTED THE BIG6, AS I FEEL THAT THIS IS A TOOL THAT ALONG WITH MANY ASPECTS OF DOL / PRODUCTIVE PEDAGOGIES ETC WOULD BE A BENEFICIAL TOOL TO HAVE A CLEAR UNDERSTANDING OF, FOR FUTURE USE WITHIN THE CLASSROOM.  http://www.big6.com/

As I am a Kinesthetic learner, the opportunity to use the BIG6 to analyse the digital tools, would assist me in becoming more proficient in the positive and negative aspects of this framework. Gathering this information would for me be an effective step in developing my own classroom pedagogies.
The process steps

WIKI"s

http://technoclue.wetpaint.com/

Just started this Wiki site. Not too sure about it yet. Will update and comment in the next few days.
I have added to my Wiki site.
Wiki for me is not a tool I would use within lower primary school. I feel that when you introduce students to new sites you should have explored it fully.
Comparing Wiki to a Blog in my opinion, Wiki is inferior due to the alterations that anyone can make on the site. I think for lower primary Blogs would be a lot simpler to comprehend and safer to use.

Ipod Technology in the classroom

My daughter is involved in a Year 2 trial of Ipod touch technology in her classroom.
Here is her own Voki to tell you why it is so good. (coming soon, she is playing with her friends - Lata)

At the beginning of the trial I was a bit sceptical about the educational value (if any), that would assist my daughter with her learning.
Well I was very much mistaken.
Speaking with my daughters school principal, I discovered why he had introduced this new technology to the school. He informed me that he attended an educational workshop in Victoria. After listening to Jenny and many others talk about the many benefits of Ipod touch technology, he felt that it would be unprofessional of him not to have similar opportunities for the students here in Gladstone. He also feels that the use of Ipods are very cost effective, less bulky for students to manipulate and really cannot believe how nimbly the students manipulate the text and numbers on the screen.
My daughters teacher uses the 6 Ipods in her class across all KLA's. These are used best during rotational activities where one on one time and peer assistance can be given to all students.

I can't wait to try some of these Apps on my Ipod touch and start getting ready for the classroom learning of the future.

MUST VIEW THIS SITE - LOTS OF INFORMATION

Access - Gain Information

I am a Googler. This is my first port of call if I have to reseach any topic. When asked a question by my son that I do not know the answer to, my reply to him will be " go on the computer and Google it". Google is now part of everyday Australian vocabulary.
I find this tool to be fast, efficient and effective.

What then does Google offer us as users of this search engine :-

Up to 8 billion Web pages.
Approximately 2 billion images
Over 1 million UseNet postings
Maps generated by Google Maps
Selected articles from online news sources
Selected telephone directories
Book content available via Google Book Search
Selected academic content available via Google Scholar and many many more.
Ensuring the content of websites before showing to students is a must for all teachers. Before  being permitted to search Google, students must understand how and what to search. Students must also understand the importance of gathering research material from primary resources and official websites. All of these steps ensure the safety of children's innocence, and the safety of the equipment. Adequate firewalls and virus detectors must be in place before entering any search engine.
As with all good teaching lessons, scaffolding must take place in the classroom, so that each step in discovering more information about the world in which we live will be  safe and virus free

On fire this week

It is all coming together for me, no longer a fish out of water but a person who can assist others.
I helped other students with their understanding of how to upload Voki's, discussed with Kyle and Ali the learning frameworks that could be used for assignment 2.
Many were surprised that my knowledge and confidence had grown since last weeks tute. I explained that I was a kinesthetic learner and only through quiet time at home and practise, was I able to gain deeper understanding of all the new tools.
I am really suprising myself with my own enthusiasim.

Concept Mapping

Bubbl.us and Text 2 Mind Map
How easy to use.
Modelling would be the best way to teach students through a MINE / OURS / YOURS teaching tool.

Bubbl.us / Text 2 Mind Map allow students time to design their own individual mind map. Proof reading skills to become more developed through checking their spelling. (mistakes can be altered easily).

These concept maps promote individuality of thought, ideas, research and design.
These tools could be used as a team building tool. The main idea in the middle and then each student within the class could then add their own in turn, before the whole class reviews, reflects and discusses the finished concept map on the class Whiteboard.
This tool encourages positive communication through class discussion, respect for others ideas, imagination, self belief (in own ideas) and a great tool for expanding knowledge.

Both tools can be used from Prep onwards from a basics "naming map" to a higher level thinking "scientific" concept map.

To Blog or not to Blog?

What exactly does it mean to Blog?
It is really just like a journal that may or may not be on one topic and may or may not be about the same subject. It is viewed by others from the latest entry to the first sort of a backwards book- finding out the ending before you really know how it began.

More information can be found on this link ...
http://www.problogger.net/archives/2005/02/05/what-is-a-blog/

Some students today spoke to me about using me as an example of how difficult it would be to create and design individual blogs in a primary classroom setting. I also could see that I, not being the most techno savvy was similar to a child who had no real concept of computers. Knew the basics but that was it.
I believe that a whole class blog could be designed for a primary school class, and students could be given time within the week to add their pictures (scanned), songs, short video clips etc onto the blog.

Blogs within the primary school curriculum, assist in developing future thinking students. It covers the Essential Learnings in ICT's within many transdiciplinary learning areas. Blogs enable students to view others ideas, reflect on their own, stay connected with family members (with a class blog), thus adding to each students self worth and sense of achievement.
Time and scaffolding in the first instance must be given in the creation of a class blog, along with lots of communication about the importance of safety whilst working online.Parental permission would be required to ensure the safety of students if photos were to be included within the class blog.
Lots to think about for future use.

WHAT THE????

My journey so far has been filled with pressure (only one hour into the course and I can feel the heat). I will need to go home and ask my seven and thirteen year old for some assistance.
I must stay positive believe in myself.
Just like the little engine that could, I too must
"think I can, think I can", until I get to the other side.

About Me

Hi there,
My name is Bernice, I am a third year student studying BLM Early Childhood Education in Gladstone. Aged above 21 and just coming to grips with all the technological changes that in my opinion alter daily.
Have to take my time, and get lots of help !!!!!
I do recommend that you read the other Blog in the profile called "Digital Literacy".
Myself and another student researched many ICT's within this topic that may be of some assistance with your "tool" review.
